Doctrine of Baptisms
1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward GOD.
2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
There are several different kinds of baptisms in the bible.
-
Baptism in water
-
Baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire
-
Baptism into the body of Christ
-
Baptism into Jesus Christ
-
Baptism into Sufferings
Water Baptism
4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,
5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
--- Mark 1:4-5
1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
2 (Through Jesus Himself baptized not, but His disciples,)
--- John 4:1-2
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
--- 1 Peter 3:20-21
The first type of baptism is the baptism in water. John baptized his disciples and multitudes in water and Jesus through His discipled in water His followers. The apostles and their followers baptized new converts in water in the name of the Jesus. The Apostle Peter writes that water baptism is the symbol of a good conscience toward God identifying with Jesus Christ and His resurrection. Water baptism is identification with Christ. Today in many circles water baptism has been replaced with the altar call. The early church did not give altar calls the baptized the new converts in water.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Fire
16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptized you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with Fire:
--- Luke 3:16
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
--- Acts 2:1-4
The baptism in the Holy Spirit and Fire is an another type of baptism. It is the baptism where the believer is baptized into the realm of the Spirit. It is entrance into the world of the Spirit and Power of God. It is the realm of the anointing it is the special endowment of God for service.
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of the sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
--- Luke 4:18-19
38 How GOD anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for GOD was with Him.
--- Acts 10:38
21 Now He which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is GOD;
22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
--- 2 Corintians 1:21-22
Jesus was anointed with the Spirit of the Lord GOD to do the following:
-
To give go messages or news to the poor and lowly
-
To heal the brokenhearted those who have been shattered
-
To herald deliverance to the captives, that is release to those who are held captive by rejection
-
To give the recovery of sight to the blind
-
To release them that are in bondage
-
To herald the acceptable year of the Lord
Jesus was anointed to do six wonderful things and the children are baptized in the Holy Spirit to do the same things. To tell the poor that is a invisible kingdom they are invited to partake of where everyone is rich in many was. We are called to heal people who have shattered lives and broken hearts. To proclaim deliverance to individuals who are held captive by their failures and faults. And to bring light to those who blind by the darkness of their hearts and minds. Also we have are given a capacity by the Holy Spirit to free those who are bound. The Holy Spirit anoints to do good. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is an anointing to do good things.
Baptism into the body of Christ
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
--- 1 Corinthians 1:13
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying Abba, Father.
--- Galatians 4:6
22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
--- 1 Corinthians 1:22
Every member of the body of Christ is baptized into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit by drinking the Spirit. As each member is baptized into the body they receive the same Spirit. That Spirit is the Spirit of Christ. His body has His Spirit. As they drink of His Spirit they are placed into the body.
The Baptism into Jesus Christ
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
--- Romans 6:3-7
Being baptized into Christ is being baptized into His death. Through this baptism four things happen to the believer.
-
The believer is dead with Christ.
-
The believer was buried with Christ.
-
The believer is raised with Christ.
-
The believer is seated with Christ.
The Baptism with Sufferings
20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedees children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
--- Matthew 20:20-23
As joint heirs with Christ we inherit both His glory and His sufferings. This too is one of the baptisms. The baptism into Jesus Christ is also the baptism into His sufferings, which is a form of death. It is the baptism of dying to one's self.
