The Moral Attributes of God

22 For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.

--- Isaiah 33:22

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

--- Romans 11:22

19 The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.

--- Psalms 103:19

14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

--- Psalms 89:14

The moral attributes of God has three dimensions or moral functions. God is the judge, lawgiver and king. God the creator set a moral order in place that constitute a moral government with a moral law and moral obligation. God is emperor with an imperial government with an imperial law and He is the imperial judge.

  • Judge - Moral obligation

  • Lawgiver - Moral law

  • Emperor - Moral government

The foundation of God's throne is righteousness and justice. Righteousness is to do righteous and act righteous. Justice is to make things right or to set things right. Love is the sum total of the moral attributes of God. God is love (1 John 4:7-8). There are seven primary attributes that define the love or moral attributes of God. They are holiness, righteousness, justice, mercy, truth, goodness, and faithfulness.

God is love

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

--- 1 John 4:7-8

Holiness

16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

--- 1 Peter 1:16

Holiness is love it is moral perfection. It is the essence of God and God is love. Love is holy the God kind that is. Holiness is He moral character and nature it is who God is. The holiness of God is perfect and complete because His knowledge and wisdom is complete. He could never be tempted to not be holy. It is impossible for Him to sin or be tempted with sin or to sin. Holiness is sinlessness, sin is disharmony with God's moral perfection and He could never be out of harmony with himself in any way. In all of His ways He is holy. The creation can completely trust God because He is holy. That why the angels cry holy, holy, holy. Because every facet of Him that they see is holy.

Righteousness

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

--- Romans 3:26

God is righteous all His ways are the right ways. Their is no wrongdoing in God and never could be. He is perfect in all of His ways. The greatest commandment was to love God first and foremost. He could never not love himself. God values himself above His creation not because He is selfish or self centered but it is wisest thing for Him to do. He could never be foolish to create anything inferior to Him and then place it above Himself. God is righteous and ever creature has to conform to His righteousness not the other way around.

7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

--- 1 John 3:7

Justice

14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

--- Psalm 89:14

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

--- Romans 11:22

Justice is the dimension of love that is demonstrated in both the kindness and severity of God. Righteousness and justice is the foundation of the throne of God. Justice is necessary to uphold the moral order of God's creation. Justice is the aspect of love that rewards good and punishes evil. The justice of God makes demands on Him that is the reason He rewards those who diligently seek Him.

Mercy

35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

--- Luke 6:36

Mercy is an attribute of love of God that is clearly seen everyday. It is revealed in nature and creation of God. Mercy is the way He deals with his enemies. He shows mercy daily to the earth for all have sinned and fallen short of His glory. His mercy endures forever. His kindness is revealed in His mercy. For all eternity God will not remember the failures of the redeemed. Even His judgments reveal His mercy.

Truth

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

--- John 17-17

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

--- John 14:6

Truth is the love of the Godhead. Their truth is the only truth. There could be no other truth only God can reveal truth. Truth is attribute to see everything as they really are. It is impossible for God to lie because He is true and could only know truth. God could never entertain or embrace any lie. He sent His son to earth to bear witness to truth and to be the revelation of the truth.

Goodness

16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

--- Matthew 19:16-17

There is none good but one that is God. Only God is good and we can partake of His goodness by being in harmony with Him and His goodness. Love is always demonstrated in goodness. God is a good God. God is a good Father. God is a good Savior. God is always God.

Faithfulness

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

--- Hebrews 11:6

God demands faith of us because He is faithful. We are called to lived by the faithfulness of God. God is faithful He cannot fail He cannot lie. The faithfulness of God the manifestation of the love of God. It is the nature of God to be dependable and true.
